League of Legends Competition Ruling

Player: Crs Chelby/Crs Perfection
Region: Oceania
Date of Ruling: May 9th, 2014
Subject: Disqualification, Account sharing during a tournament

Facts
During Game 2 of the Quarter Final game of the Winter Challenger of Curse vs Team Erase, Crs Chelby was facing difficulties staying connected to the server and to voice communications. We had our tech look at our server and ISP and found no issue on our end, and we were there to offer any assistance we could, however Crs Chelby did not have a phone we could contact him on. After a period of disconnection, Crs Chelby reconnected to the game and play resumed. He played out the rest of the games that night with no issue, however he did not reconnect to voice communication with his team for the rest of the night. The disconnect and reconnect with no further issue looked a little suspicious to us, so we flagged it for investigation. Due to our logs not updating instantly, we were unable to investigate on the day.

Friday morning after looking at the logs, we found that during this disconnected period Crs Perfection (Who was a Sub for Curse during this game) logged on to Crs Chelby's account and played the remainder of the series.

We see no suspicious activity on either account for Curse's games against Your Soul Shall Chuffer and Avant Garde Redemption last night.

Relevant Rules
8.1.1 Unfair Play. The following actions will be considered unfair play and will be subject to penalties at the discretion of Riot officials.
8.1.1.6 Ringing. Playing under another player’s account or soliciting, inducing, encouraging or directing someone else to play under another player’s account.

They are also in violation of the Summoner's code in regards to Account Sharing.

Analysis
As this situation requires Crs Chelby to allow Crs Perfection to play on his account by giving him his login details, as well as Crs Perfection logging in, and playing games on this account, both players consciously broke the rule.

Ruling
Crs Chelby and Crs Perfection are in direct violation of the above rules.

Competition Penalties
Team Curse has been disqualified from the Winter Challenger Qualifier. Avant Garde Redemption will be seeded into the Winter Regional as they placed second in the qualifier.

Crs Chelby and Crs Perfection have also been forwarded to our Player Support team and will be investigated for Account Sharing.

Hey guys I just wanted to give some insight into this decision. Smurfing in online events is something we constantly have our eye on. In a live event, we can see the player and easily verify to make sure it is the correct one, however online, you are hidden behind an easily shared account, and thus we investigate any suspicious cases. Most of the time there is no issue, and we move on with the event.

Our policy is that a player is innocent until proven guilty, and we give our players as much benefit of the doubt as possible. For us to take action like this, we are certain of the situation that took place. We account for all kinds of scenarios (For example if a player loses his internet and drives to an internet café to continue play).

Disconnects are a time we keep an eye on. During important tournaments, if a player is not able to connect to a game, a team may get desperate and have a player jump on the account to continue player to avoid being disqualified, or to avoid a 4v5.

This situation puts the other team at a disadvantage. Different players have different styles and champions, and a team may play differently against a certain player, however because they lack the information on who is playing, they could make mistakes as they do not have the full team information. For example, if the new player is an amazing Zed, but the original player is not, you could potentially miss a man, or not adapt your strategy to account for this.

In the end, account sharing is also a serious issue as well, and is against the summoners code. Account sharing leads to compromised accounts. Your friend who you trust with your account today might not be your friend in 6 months’ time, and he might want to get back at you by taking your account, or might just want your super rare skin.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place, it sounds like it was the only real thing they could do, unfortunately.

I do sympathise, but the rules are in place for a reason. Sorry CRS, hopefully we see you again in the future, the scene wouldn't be the same without the Immunity Killers.

Overall, the situation sucks.

It sucks for Riot, having to make these rulings when something is beyond their control
It sucks for CRS, for being forced to play a bad hand, with matters beyond their control
It sucks for YSSC and Erase, for losing to a team that would go on just to be DDoSed and disqualified.
It sucks for Avant Garde, who will now have a huge cloud of suspicion over them whether they did it or not.

If AvR have been seeded into Winter Regionals, does that mean they don't have to play Winter Arena? What's happening there?
