Hi all,

I'd like to apologise for not replying sooner, however I want to let you know we are aware of the issues that you are seeing, and doing whatever we can to get to the bottom of it. As pointed out by many, there is more than just the XP/IE6 issue affecting players, and from the reports and support tickets we are seeing, it is centred around particular ISPs.

We have performed a thorough investigation of our servers and service, and so far we have been unable to find any smoking gun. All signs at this stage are pointing to some kind of intermittent connectivity problem between some ISPs and our platform.

We are continually monitoring this and will let you know as soon as we find out more.

Hi all,

I wanted to follow up my earlier posts with an update that should explain a bit more about the what and why of this particular issue.

Yesterday security researchers from Google identified a significant security bug in SSLv3, a protocol used by older internet browsers like Internet Explorer 6.

Many major online service providers have opted to disable support for this obsolete protocol due to the severity of this security bug, including Cloudflare.

We leverage Cloudflare in various parts of our service including the login system, so when they rolled out this emergency change, players using outdated versions of IE6 ran into issues logging into LoL.

So far we've found that only a small minority of players are impacted, and so we think that we'd like to keep Cloudflare's change and encourage players to update their internet browsers.

We apologize that this caused login issues for some of you, but hopefully this explains why swift action was required.

We are aware that many other online services (e.g. Twitter) have followed a similar strategy and stopped supporting SSLv3 as well, so we believe that you should level-up your browser to keep up with the ever-changing interwebs.

While it sucks that you are having issues like this, they do not sound like they are related directly to the issues in this thread. This particular issue prevents some players from logging in to League of Legends at all.

I'd suggest that you get in contact with Player Support (you can open a ticket by clicking on "Support" at the top right of this page), and they can help you work through any potential issues that might be causing your connection problems.

Hi,

According to the Internet Explorer system requirements, you should be able to support IE8 even with a 32-bit machine. I don't have an XP box handy, so I can't test it myself.

Have you tried the IE update site?

Hi Summoners,

At the moment, we are receiving reports from players that they are unable to log in.

The solution we have seen working is to update to the latest Internet Explorer for your version of Windows, then reset your Internet Explorer settings. To reset your settings, open an Internet Explorer window -> Go to Internet Options -> Advanced Options -> Reset.

Following that, then try League again.

Hi,

What version of Windows / Internet Explorer do you have?

We've received a reports from players who have older versions of Internet Explorer today that they have been unable to connect.

The solution we have seen working is to update to the latest IE for your version of windows, and reset your Internet Explorer settings (Open an Internet Explorer window -> Go to Internet Options -> Advanced Options -> Reset), then try League again.

Just wanted to chime in here. Hippalus noted in a Q&A:
"Yes I think Championship Riven will come back someday. Most limited edition skins took four years to come back after release, and it's been two years for Riven so far."

Hopefully you guys can see the benefit of releasing limited skins again. But it's mainly for players that for one reason or another missed out on getting the skin when it first came out.

We'd like to give you a heads up regarding some updates to our EULA and TOU - i.e. the walls of text you zoom through when registering an account or downloading the client.
Essentially, these updates are entirely positive for players, with a focus on calling out the full extent of your rights and powers when it comes to things like account notifications and refunds. For example, we've updated the description of notification requirements when we make changes to the TOU / EULA or take action against accounts for behavioural reasons or the use of third-party programs. There are also some additions aimed at more specifically detailing your legal protections and refund rights.

Hey all,

In our previous messaging around the end of the season, we announced the rewards players could earn when ranked play in the 2014 season comes to a close. The next step is going a little more into detail about how you can earn those rewards.

You’ll earn rewards based on your solo queue tier when the season ends and the tier your highest-ranked 5v5 teams are in at the end of the season. You can earn unique summoner icons for each queue (solo and 5v5), but for teams you must have won at least ten games with that team in each specific team queue.

Season rewards are intended to not only recognize great individual play, but also positive sportsmanship and success in a team game. As a result, the most negative players who are also Chat Restricted at the end of the season will be ineligible to earn ranked rewards such as the loading screen borders or Victorious Morgana champion skin.

While the overwhelming majority of players will not affected by this ruling, we wanted to message it well in advance so that any players concerned about their behavior have more than enough time to adjust and reform before the end of the season.

Just a quick tip maybe create a Facebook event page or something similar where players can ask questions before and during the tournament!

Also make sure you get the players to read the Xfire wiki, as it may be the first time some players are using the Xfire tournament platform.

I have received a list of all the OCE servers from the support team and was thinking about running a .bat file to ping each one. However, "Request timed out" is a common theme on each server. But as pointed out in you're original post this doesn't mean that I can't actually connect.

Reasoning behind it is I feel there are probably particular servers that TPG users cant connect to (due to the fact that when I get the firewall error and queued with a friend who is in a different City with TPG he also get's it (100% of the time).

I'd like to find the culprit server!

Summoners,

We have been collecting data from the Network Diagnostic Tool thread, and I wanted to share what we have learned so far. Thank you to the 200+ summoners that have submitted a report.

The data helped us identify various areas we can improve the quality of service for you.

The most reported issue (27%) is related to the firewall issue after champ select, and 87% of those issues were players using TPG as their Internet Service provider (ISP).

This isn’t to say we aren’t looking at players on other ISPs, but this was the most prominent to start with. We were also able to identify a large portion of players that were having lag issues and we have looked further into why that is occurring.

Based on feedback and the reports we have analyzed from the first tool, we have made improvements and implemented Version 2.0 (http://oce.leagueoflegends.com/tools/network-logs).

Here is a deeper dive into some of the data:

  • Approximately 27% of all submissions were related to firewall issues after champion select and from that 27%, 87% were all related to players on TPG.
  • A further 27% of the total reports received were related to lag issues
  • The remaining 46% were for various issues such as disconnects, login errors, etc.

Firewall Error after Champ Select

With a large amount of players reporting from the same ISP, the Live Services Team at Riot OCE are working with TPG to implement a solution we believe may resolve this issue. In saying that we do know things don’t always go to plan and work exactly as predicted so once everything is in place, we will be monitoring our proposed solution carefully to keep track of its success.

Lag related Issues

Lag is an ongoing point of contention, with many online services, that we are continually working to improve. Throughout our analysis of your trace routes, we found some great information to assist you in further troubleshooting.

A trace route is a way to display the network path your internet connection takes when going from your computer to a particular server, for example League of Legends game servers. This tool also measures the delay, in milliseconds, that a packet takes to get to each cross road (or hop) in the path and back to your computer. The higher the time the longer it takes and as such the higher chance of lag.

Now what does a normal trace route look like? Below is an example of a trace route with a normal route path.

The “Request timed out” does not necessarily mean there is an issue; it simply means the routes at each of those hops is setup not to respond to your request.

The first hop in this trace is the connection from your computer to your home router. This should be less than 1ms (<1ms). From the second hop onwards you are (generally) out on the internet, so the time it takes will increase a little. As you can see by the information above we are hovering around the 13ms mark for each hop, reaching a maximum of 18ms in hop number 6.
This trace route is great and the player should have no issues regarding lag.

So what does an abnormal trace route look like?

Well to be honest it will look very similar with the exception of some of the hop times.

As you can see from the trace route above the first hop looks fine, less than 1ms to the route. Awesome! However once we get to the internet we start to see some issues. Hop 2, shows a large increase in time, 359ms and it just goes up from there.

What does this actually mean? To be straight up front, it means the time it takes a packet of data to go from your router to the ISPs first connection (or hop) for you is a long time, which is not good, especially when you’re trying to play games.

When you look closer you will see the very first hop from the computer to the internal router is nearly 100ms. This is an extremely long time to go from your computer to your router.

Now that we have a general idea of what a trace route is and what we are looking for I wanted to share some statics we found from the reports we received and a quick check list you can do to help diagnose the problem.
  • Refresher on the stats - 27% of all the reports we received were related to players getting lag.
  • Of that 27%, 56% of the reports are players getting high latency from their computer to their own router, before they even got to the internet. (The example just above this)
  • The remaining 44% can be broken down to various ISP and server related issues.
  • What can you do to help diagnose where the problem is?
  • So we have a few quick little tasks you can do to help find where your issue lies.
  • Make sure you don’t have any downloads or uploads running. This uses part of your allocated bandwidth and as such congests your connection.
  • Restart your computer and router. At times both of these devices can get overloaded and just need to be cleared up.
  • Complete a trace route to 103.240.226.249 and take a look at the time it takes for your data to reach:
    1. Your router - If this is high you have something causing high connection times inside your home network.
    2. The different hops in the route path – High hop times could indicate the route your connection is take co
    uld be experiencing issues. This could be an ISP related problem or a bad path.
  • If you are using wifi - connect with a cable to see if this improves the situation
  • Disable any proxy or VPN service you may be using.

Now that all the technical information is out of the way, I wanted to thank everyone that has reported an issue using the Network Diagnostic Tool. All the information provided has helped us identify constant points of pain and work towards solutions.

With that being said I am taking this opportunity to close down version 1 of our tool. It was a good, simple little form but in all honesty it could be better.

We are now using an updated version here: Network Diagnostic Tool 2.0(http://oce.leagueoflegends.com/tools/network-logs).

This new tool has a small group of questions to answer and a network diagnostic script (for PC and MAC) that will gather various pieces of information, in an effort to assist us in resolving your pain.

Sorry I've been silent, been in transit! Thanks for the ongoing suggestions there's some stuff there that whilst it would be awesome, isn't possible for one reason or another. An ongoing suggestion is for an ANZAC theme. I agree some armed services personnel would be okay with an ANZAC skin, but some wouldn't be... If an ANZAC skin made even one person uncomfortable that's too many.

Unfortunately because the skin team is so small and the quality bar for skins so high this isn't something we can commit to with confidence.

We spent a fair amount of time working on this today and have come up with a few base ideas we're going to explore. I don't want to talk about them just yet though, we need to see how viable they are. The good news is that there is (and always has been) a growing group of Rioters that are super committed to getting this over the line :-)
